ouch was it a new clutch? , I usually make it bog down in 1st to get traction, Ive never done a really hard launch in a cordia , it will be interesting to see how it will go

Ive done several hard launches both with 17's and deflated 15's and i tell you traction is a HUUUGE problem !!!! But no it wasn't my new clutch. (thank fudge for that!)

I've launched HARD in the past experimenting with several different tyre and suspension combinations. With the180kw my car made at the time, straight line traction wasn’t an issue (not even in the wet). As for braking, I won’t even go there, lets just say you will be amazed what high quality street tyres can do for a cordia.

Having said all this, buying expensive high end tyres isn’t a buy once buy right kind of thing. They will struggle to last 10,000k’s but the benefits well outweigh the cost.

your right about the tires, we were in a datsun 1600 (fj20t) with semi's and gtr r32 brakes , without the tires if would have just locked up every time but the tires really helped with the braking , I still dont like the RWD though

They should be able to last longer than 10k k's other wise there juts a waste really. considering most cars have tires do 50k or so, 10k is just ridicules for the amount your paying also.

MIght aswell have a set for daily and set for weekend fun

Epic i must say.

Exactly right, most divers do buy tires which are capable of lasting the 50,000k mark. However, majority of these drivers will also tend to complain about traction issues (Not pointing fingers). For example, dads daily runs on Dark Nights (lol, enough said), but they have done over 70,000k’s and remain roadworthy .

And yes the amount paid for sticky tyres is ridiculous but so is the feeling when they smash you back into the seat!! But no one ever complains about this ayy.

I for one will justify the added cost for safety, even if it means I fuel on noodles and rice, lol.

thats why I got the 19s , then keep some track rims , the lighter and smaller the better for the track days

For the last couple of months I have been busy with my studies (as uni was approaching exam period). Consequently, because of this the cordia was neglected for quite some time. Fortunately, all is now over until March next year so plenty of time to work on the cordia.


Anyhow, Update time!!

Today’s efforts, porting away at the intake and exhaust.



These heads are very poorly cast, for this reason here I am cleaning up Mitsubishi’s casting defects. This should help with eliminating some stress concentration to help further with eliminating chance of failure due to cracking.


Performing an oil port to the head, this is the same port I do to all me heads. Reason for this is that multiple shaves reduce flow to the head, this ensures it will not starve.

I use one of these Trav, It's a dremel 400 series rotary tool kit with a flexi shaft attachment.



In the box it comes with 80 or so end bits, doesn’t seem like much but these things are f**kn expensive when purchased alone and unfortunately many other bits (not included in the box) are required to be purchased. I needed carbide cutters, sanding drums, abrasive buffs, ect, ect and the list goes on.

The rotary tool is quite cheap to purchase but the end bits are where they sting you hard!!!!!. The bits are where dermel make their money, in fact over the years I have spent more on bits alone than what the rotary tool is worth.

Whats the idea behind the tear drop shape port in the corner of the head?? Are you finished porting that one?

Hey gorge, it’s been a while, how are you mate?

I’m porting the tear drop as that is the main feed to the head and turbo, multiple shaves of the head eventually reduce flow. With enough shaves this can result in lifter tick and turbo shaft play, this mod ensures nothing will starve of oil so I do it to all my heads.

As can be seen in the pics my head is still ok with plenty of shaves left in it, this mod didn’t really need to be done but its good practice. As for being complete, no not yet, the photos where just to show where I am up to. I will post more photos once complete.

That's interesting, did you use a drill press for the other ports or the dremmel alone to do all the work??
Interested, to know if i could do the same thing, bro has the dremmel machine i could borrow, and it sounds like a win win modification if it's simple enough... LoL... is it??

Yea mate its simple enough but I wouldn’t go pulling my head off just to do it, that's for sure. (Remembering this is a vr4 head)

As for the procedure, yes it can all be done easily with a dremel provided you use the right bit for the job. For the porting you will need the flex shaft extension but all else can be done without.

From the work I have done, there is only benefit in terms of power from the porting, polishing (not mirror) and knife edging of the runners. All else, porting the tear drop and removing casting defects, is just a little extra insurance that nothing starves of oil and that the head has less chance to crack (I have seen this twice, hairline at the surface).
