Had some time to take out the Tig and work on the rear subframe today, enjoy the pics.

Here is a pic of my inverter tig.

Upgraded the wp-26 torch to a ck-9 (with gas lens and superflex line), very much worth the upgrade!

Prepared the seams

and, here are the welds.

What are you modding the rear subframe for mate?

0.o..

Good welds btw :)

when i first read it, i thought 0.o 4wd but then i spotted he means the sub-frame that holds the steering rack, making it seemless?

Thanks for the kind comments guys......... and its update time!

I pulled my block out of storage and decided to do some work on it this week.
Image

Began by cleaning the oil pump then ensuring both the drive and driven gear side clearances were within spec.
Image
Image

Then reassembled the oil pump with a genuine stubby shaft to eliminate the balance shafts
Image

Installed genuine Mitsubishi NOK seals and gaskets.
Image
Image

For those of you interested, here are all the part numbers for the individual gaskets included in my kit.
Image

When balance shafts are removed, it is important to reinstall the balance shaft bearings at an orientation to block the oil galleries.
This restriction is required for the oil system to maintain pressure that would otherwise be dangerously dissipated with the shafts removed.
Image

When balance shafts are removed on first gen 63's, the downside is undesirable excessive oil pressure.
I have seen oil pressures at over 120psi and this (from experience) has caused to seals to blow out and leak oil.
The issue occurs as the outlet for the oil pressure relief valve (on the oil filter housing) is not large enough to operate sufficiently with the increased rate of change in oil pressure.
The pictures below show how to rectify the issue.

Note that the size and shape of the porting is important. There is no need for the outlet to be larger than the inlet and the shape must be so that the top of the piston valve seals when the valve is shut.
The best way to do this is to port a D shape and widen the hole, this minimises the distance that the piston needs to travel and relieves more pressure sooner.

I have removed my balance shafts aswell but did not modify the pump shoulder........my oil pressure is a little higher when cold, but running with 5 weight oil sees the pressure lower than standard when hot.

My oil pressure when running (above 3000rpm) is no different.

Interesting stuff Andrew,

I run 15w50 with .002" main, .002" big end and .0035" piston to wall clearances and see 120+psi loading first and second gear. When the rate of change in rpm is reduced this problem does not occur.

Post subject:  Re: trq-str new ride

Interesting Koray, my clearances are close to yours, but my piston clearance is .0025.......have you run a 5W - 30 oil to find out if your pressure is too low?

Imagine how the oil pressure would be in the engine if you ran with Mobil 0w - 15?

Just a thought?

Post subject:  Re: trq-str new ride

The relief valve is to bleed off excessive (above 90ish psi) when the spring tension is overcome by oil pressure. The problem in my case is that when the valve is open, the hole is not large enough to flow the additional supply. hence the porting.

Running 5 weight oil in my engine should see very similar results to what you see in your engine. This mod does not alter overall system pressure, it helps regulate it to Mitsubishi specs.

I like to run 15w-50 as I find it is a good all rounder and helps cushion the blow during cold starts.

Any particular reason you run 5 weight?

As you know, twin cams run tight tolerances.....I would like to "see" my engine oil move quickly to start lubricating vital parts......mainly the turbocharger as I have left the original feed line out of the head.........might relocate it directly off the oil pump. :)

I know I have havent been posting on here in a while but I was actually getting work done on the car. Was also working on some vr4 cordia related youtube videos. Well, all that has been put on a massive hold as I was involved in a motorcycle accident. Long story stort, car failed to give way, Koray t-bones car. Now....korays f@@k'd, his bikes f@@k'd and I can't wrench on my car for a while (sad days).

That's no good Koray........I gave my motorcycle (ZZR 600) away after I seen my brother after a BAD accident.

I understand your decision completely, especially since you have a wife and kids to provide for.

I ended up with:
Bruised lungs,
A fractured sternum and left clavicle,
2.5 inch cut to the bone near my left ancle (just missing the Achilles tenden),
Left arm in sling due to fractured clavicle and right arm in a brace and just barely usable (need to xray, elbow pain elevated on day 3),
Soft tissue damage all over.

I can't walk atm and need help getting in and out of bed.

So yea, bikes are dangerous and I'm glad I didnt end up worse.

Sorry to hear you came to grief on your bike. I work in a hospital and emergency staff have a name for motorbike riders...they're called donors. From first hand experience it could have been a lot worse for you. And most accidents are not the riders fault. Hope your back on your feet soon mate.

Your reference was from about 4 years ago, at that time I had two maps for the engine.
180kw @ 15 psi with 98RON
205kw @ 18 psi With 98RON + Toluene
I was limited by pre ignition at the time, hence the larger turbo with the new build.

The urethane insert was ordered from a mate who worked at Repco. I remember giving him dimensions and placing an order. The previous mount I had on the car was urethane also, It began to deform after a few years. When I replaced it, I didn't notice any difference.

Cheers guys for the kind comments in regards to the accident.
Recovery is going well, I am back on two feet, albeit with pain and a limp. Upper body still needs time as well.
