Hi all,

It's been awhile.

I’ve been noticing lately that not many good cordia turbos are left in existence.

Good ones are getting very rare and honestly I haven’t seen a nice one on the road in years.

Most of you would agree with that, so I’ve been thinking maybe it is a right time to buy one and put it away or at least put it on club plates and enjoy it.

I have other nice cars in my collection but a bit of cult classic cordia turbo , you cannot go wrong.

So I did , this is the car I got.

This is the pic of the car when it was driven about 1.5 years ago.

Paint is not bad but there are few areas that need touching up as it has been sitting outside for more than a year and it’s dirty and it hasn’t been looked after.

Car was originally from Adelaide and it used to red, body is very good .

It has 2 L cyclone dash engine in it with an aftermarket computer.

Wiring is messy and intercooler piping is off but definitely a car with a great potential.

I just bought a Cordia Turbo about a month ago after searching for a long, long time here in the US (decades). Mine is basically just a shell with a bunch of extra pieces (a jigsaw puzzle) included, but it was a good shell with not much rust. Now the issue will be finding good parts. I hope that all the Cordia fans out there will keep their parts, even if they can't use them themselves. As all of you can imagine, and as I also expected, I am having trouble finding those parts now. My goal is to restore my Cordia to as close as a new stock vehicle as is possible. Thanks for reading!

Heckdave,
Email me, as I have a cordia turbo (1988) that I bought 3 years ago and I put it back together from a heap (bought for 300.00) but now runs great and hauls ass.
I have done ALLOT of parts research so it you need any info let me know. Just as an FYI, the turbo will need to be updated to a TD05-16G since the TD05-12A is stupid hard to find parts for and the -16g works really good (12 blade turbine and cast impeller). I also modified mine to run a 4 wire heated o2 sensor for better fuel control and have it locked down to 10psi of boost. I have much more info for you if you need it.

Rob

PS: Here is the article about the very car I bought.

Speaking of keeping the old Cordia's alive, yesterday I spotted a silver stock looking Cordia GSR Turbo on Barrenjoey Rd at Newport, Sydney. Keen to get in touch with owner if you are a Northern Beaches local so we can swap notes. My 85 AB GSR is getting ready for a respray after more than 10 years in a container. I have been getting a few good parts off gumtree from blokes in Adelaide.

You are right Ken.

I still get surprised sometimes that so many cordias are kept and tucked away, even though it is rare to see them on the road.

It really shows you how many people really have a soft spot for them, even today.

It was the car of our youth after all :)

80’s cult classic

Ken, start a topic on your build, I am sure people would like to see it.

I got the car home.

I am still going around and finding out what needs to be done to it.

First, the wheels are 17 inch but they have put on 225 45 17 tyres!! And tyres are gone.

These are way too big and I am going with 205 40 17’S

Someone also added a wheel adaptors to push them out a bit.

Steering is so heavy…

You cannot even put a finger between the back wheels and the rear wheel arch.

Engine is cyclone dash and it looks like it has a customs made intake.

Is it fitted with Power Steering?

No it doesn’t, it is a 1984 model.

I always preferred cordia without the power steering, it felt more soild at high speeds.

I do have to put 205’s on it, the 225’s are not necessary.

Funny enough , the brakes are stock.

Rear drums and front discs, I am actually thinking of leaving the drums on the back just getting drilled discs for the front
and better pads.

I want to be able to fit original cordia wheels when taking the car to shows.

The problem is finding a set these day, I used to give them for free once upon a time 

I have power steering on my 85. Always happy with it as the fatter tyres needed compensation. It was never too light in my mind. Maybe I never drove it faster enough....

I've been thinking about stock wheels also (for shows and such). I had a long debate with my wife about the Magna Elite wheels (15x7) that came out on some AC's. She hates them, reckons it makes the car look like a Magna, but the 15x7 profile is a good fit for the car.

There's a crashed 84 GSR advertised in gumtree with the stock GSR wheels still on it. $1000 he wants in Melton. I could use the centre console out of that as mine is cactus....

The thing with the rear drums in the Cordia (or any other car that light) is that do virtually no work. A set of rear pads would last like 250,000kms...so given they do so little work there's an argument for leaving them as they are. I tidyed up my drums and they came up looking trumps. Here's a pic...

Looking good there.

Yes I saw that add . I got in touch with him to see if he will sell it in parts.

He said no, he also said there is no interest in at all.

Nobody will buy that to rebuild, it’s only a parts car. It’s very rough.

Maybe is 2-3 of us all chip in and take what we need? It’s an option.

Pm if interested we might arrange something.

Yes, good old magna wheels.

I had a set of those back in day for every day driving, it was a good wheel, 15 inch I believe.

How’s your interior holding up?

My interior is rough. There is a lot to do.
The plastic suffered due to the moisture in the container coupled with UV damage from the 80s and 90s out in the open. The back of the rearview mirror virtually crumbled in my hands.
I have just finished rebuilding the drivers seat as it had rusted up all the mechanism and the cover hadn't been washed in 20 years. While the drivers seat is out I want to fix up all the under dash wiring. I took out the old turbo timer and Cobra inhibit switch thing. It was a mess and needed tiying up. Plus I am sure it would cause me headaches with the ignition when I finally get to start it.
Been playing around with some gauge clusters. Old school round gauges but I needed something to fill in where the casette player used to go. The old casette and radio down in the console went decades ago. They're still in a box somewhere.
My centre console is also in a bad state. I remember gluing it back together back in the 90s. To many times kicked whilst trying to climb in the back seat for you know what.

The plastic gets fragile over time, I am having the same issue with few bits but overall it is not bad.

I had to install a new dash (the usual place where it cracks) mate what a nightmare, no room to put your hands in, nuts and screws everywhere, got most of it done.

My plan is to have to whole dash painted black.

As long as you are doing something every week , you will get there.

Were abouts are the injectors on that intake manifold. Is it underneath the manifold or is it still center point injection, highly doubt it. Just curious thats all.

They are one the side not center point injection.

I will take some pics as I go.

Whoever had this car did some major work on it.

If you decide to paint the dash I would strongly recommend going satin or matt as any shine will reflect off the windscreen and drive you mad.

Have you considered wrapping the dash in suede or something like that?

Yes, a very good point.

The seats are out of AC , black and white, I think the car will look better if the dash was all black.

Need to have a close look at the dash before deciding what to do. I hope it has survived ok and a bit of amourall will clean it up. The steering wheel was awful. So cracked, mouldy and manky from years of sitting in the container. So I decided rather than buying one of the few originals that are available on gumtree, I would attempt to paint it using a grey vinyl spray paint. Take a look at the picture and tell me what you think. I'm quite happy with the finish. Still a few cracks visible around the top but a million bucks on what it was. I need to figure out how to restore the small Mitsubishi logo but that can be done whenever.

I'm pretty sure I will need to wrap the centre console. Its been broken and glued up more times than Michael Jackson!

That looks good to me.

I prefer the original steering wheel too, even though mine is an aftermarket one.

I've been steam cleaning my seats last week, it starting to look better.

Check out the before and after on my front seats. I stipped all the covers off and scrubbed them with washing detergent.

On the kidney supports where the black fabric was worn I bought some special black fabric spray paint from Bunnings. Came up trumps.......although the first hot day I take it for a spin I am sure I come home with black marks on my tshirt......

Much better mate. Keep it up.

I had many cars over the years but I have to say, cordia seats have to be one of the most comfortable.

They suite the look of the car very well.
