HI
I HAVE A 1988 MITSUBISHI CORDIA TURBO THAT IS OVERHEATING
THE CAR WILL RUN FINE AS LONG AS IM MOVING . THE PROBLEM STARTS WHEN i GET STUCK ON HEAVY TRAFFIC. THE TEMP WOULD GET ALL THE WAY UP TO 226F BUT A SOON AS I START MOVING IT GOES DOWN TO ABOUT 200F
i BEEN TRYING TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM FOR A LONG TIME
i HAVE REPLACE THE WATER PUMP FIX MY RADIATOR, MY FAN COMES ON WHEN THE NEEDLE REACHES THE HALF WAY MARK, AND IM NOT LOOSING ANY COOLANT. ALSO IM NOT RUNNING A THERMOSTAT(TAKES THE CAR LONGER TO WARM UP)
ANOTHER CRAZY THING IS THAT IF SHUT THE CAR OFF FOR A COUPLE OF MINUTES THE ENGINE TEMP WOULD RISE ABOUT 10 DEGREES.

I HAVE RUN OUT OF IDEAS AT THIS POINT, SO IF ANYONE HAS A SOLUTION FOR THIS i WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT

Your car: MY car? hmmm a black hunk of metal that moves once every year
Blown headgasket perhaps, take the rad cap off and idle the car and watch for bubbles if its a constant stream of small bubbles chances are u have a small head gasket leak.

is it off a aftermarket gauge? ( always check if you have a faulty temp sensor first )

then thermostat, coolant, waterpump, thermofan working etc

Hi mate,

There is most probably no pressure in your cooling system. I recommend you change your radiator cap and run some good quality coolant.
Pressure in a fluid system increases the boiling point!

How do your radiator hoses feel at operating temperature? Are they easy to squeez in like when the engine is cold with the radiator cap off or really hard to squeeze in as though they are filled with pressure?

as the othere guys have said mate you will know if its really bad just run through the troubel shooting.
my first cordia had a fan wired in so it could be turned on and off so the car would never get to hot.

the other thing the thermostat may be jamed and stuffed. pull it out and but it in boiling water if it opens all good if not get a new one

This is quite normal, do not worry about this. However, your 226 fahrenheit in traffic is quite an issue. Try what I stated 2 posts above, it should solve your problems.

If it does, next step would be to put your thermostat back in. better yet, replace it with a new one.

cordia's are really bad with this as they get hot in the traffic normally anyway , I remember going through melb city and the temp was on hot till I got out of the traffic , but it didnt blow up , like your thinking it will , you sort of panic when you see the gauge going that high,

mine had a new head , head gasket ,lower temp thermostat, radiator cap, water pump, and nulon long life coolant and it still did the temp rise

I find the problem to be the radiator , if you look in my ride area , you can see I ditched the radiator first before anything else

I suggest you put the thermostat back in, as sometimes you need to slow down the water flow.
I know this sounds strange but i know it made a difference in my club car when i was racing
although it wasn't a cordia.

less caps would be good... thats a bit harsh on the eyes, might be that the radiator is just getting old, i have found personally that cordias have no trouble staying cool unlike travs problem

old rads get a bit thin and dont transmit the heat anywhere near as well

the car has a new radiator cap, and im not loosing any coolant at all.
I have replace all four temp sensor in the car also, so i know all the sensor are working.
When i first got the car about a year a ago, the radiator was in bad shape and i was not able find one for the car because here were i live no auto parts sell one for the car. for all i know the radiator could be the original from 88.

ps. are there any other cars that would have similar radiators that would not need a lot of modifications
the problem i have is that here in the United States is hard to find parts for this car

the radiator setup I bought should cool alot more than the orignal , but my fan is alot larger also and around 3 times as more powerful and Im not running water cooling through the turbo also , but I wont know till I try it , fingers crossed

I think the cordia should have came out with bonnet vents like the evo , or Tims car, that would make alot of difference

sounds like your pretty solid with your set up then, i was think of doing the same thing i will have to now when i get the cash, its a good upgrade for the cash you put in to it.

bonnet vents are a must for any cordia thats an every day driver, i am going to be cut the front of the bonnet where the step is.

I ran an alloy radiator out of a r32 nissan but the lower water pipe is a bit of a problem as it
comes out straight , it would be easier to fit if the lower pipe angled up at 45°. I believe some one
else on here used a honda radiator ,not sure which model though.

how much of the 400km's is it stuck not moving for more then 5 mins?
melbourn traffic playes hell on cooling systems.
thats the only problem i have found so fair with trav's cooler change over the pipe work is going to be fun to make it work

where does the temp needle sit when cruising at 100km/h? (on the standard gauge btw, those temps mean nothing to me haha :P)

^^ THIS!
when i first got my cordia, it ran cold on the hwy, then hot in traffic, replaced the thermostat and was all good.
put a thermostat back in and see how you go. cheap and easy to do, and may fix your problem.
without a thermostat, sometimes the water gets pumped around too quick, not allowing it to take the heat away from the motor as it is flowing through.
