What im wanting to do is hook up a gps receiver to a laptop and use it that way... ive seen it done before....

well, you can buy USB GPS receivers from ebay, the issue is finding software + maps.

For marine use, I would recommend something intended for the purpose, mate you don't want to run your boat up a reef because your laptop told you it was ok... Also, laptops crash, hard drives die, less reliable, not waterproof etc.

Your car: MY car? hmmm a black hunk of metal that moves once every year
i have noticed with gps and wireless stuff toboot that you get what you pay for

I would google this man im sure you will get some good hits

Edit...

just after a quick google

'how to get gps on a laptop'

I found garmin devices ranging from 40...to 200 as for software it would either come with it or you just download it.

as you probably know, anything with "marine" in front of it automatically doubles the price...

Whatever you do, make sure you're comfortable with putting your life in it's hands. Something to think about if you were intending on getting a $40 GPS. In a car, worst case, you get lost... In a boat, if it happens when you're in bad weather and you can't navigate, then you could crash into something... Ok maybe that's a bit of an extreme example but you should give it some thought.
