once you give it a clean there is a circlip that you pop off then the "star" comes off the end of the shaft

No need to remove a circlip. Hold the shaft hard (lol) then give the cup a good solid smack with a hammer, cup and retainer/balls will come out as an assembly. Then clean it all, put the boot on the shaft, centralise the circlip on the splines and then using a soft faced hammer/mallet knock it back on. Don't damage the splines obviously. Then grease it up, seal the boot, job done.

Which way do i smack the "cup"? Outwards, away from the gearbox?

When you say cup and retainer balls come out as an assembly, Do you mean inside the boot(as in the boot comes off too?

Does anyone have any pics with arrows lol?

Umm i can do a text drawing :D

(gearbox) (inner joint)(boot) =======(shaft)========(boot) (outer joint)
................................................................<<<remove boot...........>>> hit it that way

remove the boot clamp and slide the boot <<< clean and then remove the outer joint >>>

try jons way if not confident remove the circlip first :)

perhaps even remove the whole drive shaft so you can see what your doing if u have a vice on a bench that works well.

definitely remove from gear box first. That's gotta be a reward for creative drawing I reckon lol. It makes the point though.
