Thought I should probably post this up here. I will keep updating it as I do stuff.
My goal is to make a VR4'd Cordia with good handling and even better braking with 180-210kw atw for under 3k. It will see little road use, majority of use will be at Mallala, Collingrove and Monarto events.

It started with this - CC Lancer (piece of shit literally) that had the VR4 conversion done properly, motor was very healthy at 160psi across, gearbox had obliterated 3rd gear. No real upgrades, just a small FMIC. It did however come with an EPROM'd single board J spec ECU and other lil bits that I can use. I only paid $1000 for it, BARGAIN
Image

So I set about stripping the car, taking whatever I could use out.
Image

Once I stripped it all out, I sold it to a mate for $50. Moved it out, and picked this up
AB GSR, had a VR4 in it, but the engine got sold. It had a shit steering wheel, rear disc conversion, 3" exhaust and some cool ol' school 15's that will be daily wheels. Body is rough but I will practice my body work on it, doesn't have to look awesome, as long as it goes well....
Image
Image

So I begun stripping the engine, found that No.4 big end was not far from spinning, so crank is at the machinists being linished. Specs are Mahle rings, ACL Race Mains and Rod bearings, ARP rod studs, ARP headstuds, full ACL Race gasket kit with MLS gasket, 3rd gen lifters, braided oil feed and GT Pumps oil drain. Budget but strong build.
Image

Here are some of the goodies I have bought for it and started fitting:
Evo 3 cluster:
Image

Some rebuild parts (gotta love 30% below trade)
Image

Evo 3 master, booster, slotted rotors, twin pots, VR4 oil cooler, spare head with hardened springs and stainless valves(will get 272's or maybe 280's once it is on the track, 055 with K&N filter, Evo 8 560's, Elig pads:
Image
Image
Image

I'll be using the CC Radiator as it is much thinner, it cooled the Lancer with the VR4 in it, so I don't see any difference in it going in a Cordia, I just need to fab new mounts.
Image

17x7 Sparco copies and I've picked up some second hand semi R888's, will be getting them powdercoated in Gunmetal:
Image

Evo 6 FMIC:
Image

I'll be running a Steve Murch MSE turbo and manifold that I got for cheap, it is around a GT30 with a .76 rear.

Should get the crank back by next Tuesday, Engine will be assembled by the weekend. Then I just have to choose a clutch, brakelines to the master and braided lines, piping, chip and tune and other lil things.

Sweet, looking good should be a strong build.

How will you go about removing the factory studs out of the rods? press bench?

Im currently in the process of a similar build, and have not yet found rebuild specs on stuff like ring gaps and bearing clearances. Im curious to know what specs you will be going by. ive heard programs such as boyce can be inaccurate at times.

Are you going to keep the balance shafts or remove?

Haven't decided on the balance shafts yet. I deleted them on my last build. I'm an automotive trainer, so I have a fully decked workshop at my disposal which is very useful, so I will use the press to get the studs out.
As for ring gaps and bearing cap torque, I will be using factory specs. I have a genuine workshop manual that I 'borrowed' from my old Mitsu Dealership. Stock pistons and rods will be fine, just gotta make sure the chip tune is as close to spot on as possible. I'm in no rush to finish it as I missed GSR/Evo track day, so might take a bit longer on the build....see I competitive I feel :P

Thanks for the words.

On your last build when you removed the scilent shafts did you get the rotating assembly balanced.

Yeah, I deleted the shafts on my last build. I had the rotating mass balanced. It was pretty much vibration free, just a lil tickle from 2700-3000RPM.
Picked up some more semi's, 50% Re55's. Can't wait to get this on the track!

Your car: MY car? hmmm a black hunk of metal that moves once every year
if i had the chance i would delete them from every block i built, i have had snapped balance shaft belt and makes the car undrive able! not that they snap often just one less thing to go wrong.

Well the reason my VR4 died originally was that the balance shaft bearing spun out and was bouncing around in the crankcase! POS. Yeah I might take them out lol

I had the 2.3 balanced..............cost $300...........but I needed to include the flywheel to ensure consistency.

I also had to remove the VR4 harmonic balancer as it was no longer suited for build..........so I purchased a Fluidampr to ensure torsional twist of the crankshaft was eliminated.

Lol thanks mate. Andrew, if the crank has torisional twist you have worries! The crank is driect acting, and is hollow per say due to the oil galleries, if it is twisting thats not cool. The design of the crank pins is so to eliminate crank twist.

A full rotating mass is an assembled block, dampener, flywheel and clutch assembly. It cost me $120 at mates rates.

good stuff! but whats the tally up to now?

i would recommend removing the balance shafts from any 4G your rebuilding, this is my second without shafts, and i haven't noticed any vibrations on either engine! :D

:? It is at about 3.5k now and the engine is in pieces. Me being me have slightly veered off course from a quick freshen then on the track to full race gaskets, ACL Race bearings, ARP's, Earls fittings, big turbo, manifold, injectors, chip, cooler, 17's, semis.....Those that know me know I get bored real easy. Change my mind about 4 times a day
That price includes both cars, engine and all parts so far. Obviously labour is nothing and now I don't need to pay for fabbing of cooler pipes, mounts etc as Megan bought me a good welder for my Bday. I'm hoping to be on the track for mid 4k.....
