Post subject:  Target 1000hp Cordia

After 15 years of playing with galants, mirages, colts and a few DSM's here and there it was time to get back into a race car. I am looking for another long term project and want to see how far my creativity can take me again. I completed and spent a few years enjoying my 4G63 rat rod. The time has come for that to go so we can pay off the last of our debt and so I can get back into a race car. I picked this thing up two weeks ago and we are just about ready to start putting it back together. It should be fun. 4G63 from my rat rod, FWD DSM transmission and a goal of 1950lbs or lighter with driver before I get started on the roll cage and getting creative with the chassis. Here is where I stand about a week and a half into ownership.

You haven't wasted any time. Will be interesting to see your progress.

You do realise the colt is lighter than the cordia?

I have a stripped 89 mirage in front of my house making just shy of 900hp and it weighed 2150lbs at the track last year. From everything I have read and from tearing into this car I see no reason to think that this car weighed the advertised 2100lbs from the factory.

The 89 turbo colts and mirages weigh 2550-2650 depending on options from the factory. I know as I have owned 5 and weighed everyone.

The auzzie cordia weighs 2018 kg (4448.93 lbs) fully optioned, 1051 kg (2317.58) for the basic GSL model with no options, ..........your USA model is non-turbo but fully optioned.......Hummmm.

This was a turbo car. I just cannot see a cordia ever weighing more than two tons. That is just crazy. There is just not the much car there. I have a pickup the dwarfs the cordia and and it actually does weigh 4400lbs, I just don't see that. Non the less. I am moving forward and looking to have this thing down the track in the next 8-13 weeks unless something happens. We were playing with a 14b turbo on my friends car the past few years. I am going to throw that on to give it one last shot at going fast. If my Holset HX52 does not sell by the time that stuff is done it will go back on. If it does I have been eyeing a 80-82mm Borg Warner turbo for son time and would love to see one of those hanging off my engine.

Then your looking at the 4000lb end of the scale fully optioned.

Replace all of the glass with lexan and use a hole saw in all the internal panels and you might make under 2100 lbs.

Not sure those figures are correct Andrew, I find it hard to believe a cordia could weigh 2t. late model Holdens and Fords are sub 2 tonne yet feel like tanks in comparison.

I look forward to your progress with this car and can't wait for the end result.

Keep us posted.

The motor should be going in this weekend. I am picking up the new main bearings tomorrow and should have those rolled in tomorrow evening. Just deciding if I want to paint the engine bay now or pull the engine back out and do the car at the same time after I get everything worked out.

O No, you have the Cordia whit the duo heatlights (USA look). I search the lights all many years but I can't find it.

1000 HP? wow, cant wait to see this!
Are you strengthening the subframe at all?? I reckon the Cordia's twist a bit when you flog em, no chassis....

I am not sure yet. I have some ideas for the bolt on lower core support and for the front cross member that the steering bolts to. I am just going to get it running for now and start work on those things once I get the parts in it. I am also going to be working on a roll cage as well.

I finished putting new rod bearings and main bearings in my engine last night. I may have to cut the firewall for my secondary injectors. I need to do some measuring tomorrow before I try to drop the engine in.

I made the timing belt motor mount today. Put the oil pan on the motor, swapped the dowel pins on the cams so I can move the fuel pump to the intake cam, swapped the T3 manifold on for the 14b for the first part of the year and cut the firewall to fit my second fuel rail. Also got the mounts on. The engine goes in tomorrow.

Interesting. I've never seen the firewall cut away like that in a cordia before.

Post subject:  Re: Target 1000hp Cordia

I got the fenderwells cut out but, need to cut more into the frame rail on the passenger side to clear the transmission. I also need to cut more of the firewall so I can actually work on the manifold. The good thing i though I would have to cut the driver strut tower to clear the fuel pump but, I turned the pump and it has plenty of room now. I had to cut the motor mount and redo it as it was not even close. I did not change the stock geometry and it was clear it was not going to work. I cut it in half and filled the gap back in. I trimmed off a few brackets that will no longer be used. I am going to have to cut the K-member to clear the back of the transmission.

I am also going to have to figure something out for the steering as the transmission is going to be halfway into the steering rack. That looks like my biggest hurdle on the build though. I also have to cut the frame rail on the driver side so I can continue to run an oil cooler. It clears with the block off fittings just fine but, the hose ands wont even be close. So I have to pull the engine back out so it will be easier to finish all the cutting and welding. Not a big deal as it is held in there by only three bolts right now.

I have not searched yet but, are there any pictures of what folks have had to do to fit a FWD DSM transmission into a cordia? Specifically for the steering. I am already aware of what I need to do to the frame on the passenger side. Looks like it will be right in the steering.
