That's Grant's old car, Matthew owns it now, that engine is a 63 as stated as part of the engine number and has full roller cam and hydraulic lash adjusters.

You could tell the difference between the 63 and 62 as the rocker cover was a little different, the crossover pipe is completely different shape (longer) and painted metallic silver with red ECI TURBO lettering.

62 is 82mm piston diameter, 63 is 85mm.

Big difference.

Mocked up the Galant rocker system on my bare AC head........all fits.........checked the cordia tunnel retainers, they are the same, the rocker rods are not, the Galant has an oil hole in the back to pressurize the lash adjuster where the cordia's in omitted.

Just need to check rocker cover clearance, doesn't look too good at the moment.

Ended up getting 24 lash adjusters from a TL magna........all of the 96 - 98 Veradas adjusters where stuffed...these are in great condition with minimal wear and are "solid" to push in and out.

Image

All cleaned and checked in accordance with the Mitsubishi service manual.

Yes, the other eight are in the rocker gear.

I had to make some "retainers" so the lash adjusters don't fall out during installation........simple use of tin plate has achieved this:

Image

Nearly ready for installation................no more noisy tappets...........yes!!!!

The rocker cover clears from what I can see.

Big disappointment..........fitted the rocker set only to find the rocker ratio is WAY off with the cordia camshaft, there is a good 4mm gap.

Here is a pic of the difference:

Image

The engine was "rattling" like a bitch!

OK, take two........go to the wreckers and find a TP magna.........take its rocker set........rocker angle is perfect when layed on the original adjustable one:

Only problem is they are all 1 in 3...........I now need 4 2 in 4's to complete (Rockers are around the other way), so my question is.........which other model mitsi runs the lash adjusters to suit?

I put a Galant/Sonata roller rocker/hydraulics lifters assembly in my Starion with no problems. I believe that I used the Galant camshaft though.

Why would you use the Galant camshaft.........it's 252 degree in duration where the JA is 264?

Because using a roller rocker on a slipper rocker type camshaft will change the valve timing.

Can't see how this changes the advertised cam duration?

Apologies to the guys from starquestclub forum who i stole the piucture from.

See how the diameter of the roller is smaller than the diameter of the slipper. This will affect ramp rates and acceleration of valve opening. Using a roller rocker on a slipper cam will effectively make the cam smaller.

OK, have installed the hydraulic system into my AC, the engine is not "silent" you can still hear some "ticking" but I have a reflective structure (my shed), I believe most of the "noise" is coming from the rockers just touching the ribbing of the rocker cover..........will check later, the engine idles very smoothly and responds nicely to a quick open throttle.

Pretty happy so far.............here are some pics:

Research and development continues, ended up getting a full rocker set off of a 2 litre Express van.

Ok, have removed the rocker cover, turned upside down only to find no trace of the rockers "touching" the internal ribbing.

As seen here:

Image

Will replace with a proper AC cam cover, the one above is AB........but just to be sure will "flatten" the ribbing slightly.

Image

The hydraulic tappets maybe just need to settle in.
