Spammers are always going to find ways to beat the system no matter what security measures are put in place.

The only sure way to minimise account spam is to go back to manual approvals of accounts. This is a manual process and is very time consuming. It's definitely something I want to avoid going back to.

Hopefully, the developers at phpBB can come up with an improved spam solution. Until then the admins and mods will just need to be vigilent and keep on deleting spam posts and accounts.

I recently installed an updated "captcha" mod which has made it harder for bots read the letters required during registrations.

This has cut back on nearly all automated spam which is good news for now. Let's hope spammers don't find a workaround anytime soon.

I have a problem with posting pics.............why is max set at 256K?................I am sick of having to use an external provider like photobucket when larger pics can be accepted...............Steve on Cordia freaks runs the same database and it's allowed.......WTF?

This is a board setting. We want to encourage users to use external image hosting providers like photobucket rather than host large files on this server since it can potentially affect performance. Plus, those services are free and this server is not.

The majority of forums don't even allow direct uploading of images since their servers would struggle to handle the loads if traffic is high enough.

If users want to use this forum's hosting funtion then we recommend their images be resized to something like 1024x768. The size of these images in most cases will be well under 256kb. We certainly don't want users uploading large images like 2.5Mb that you'd get from a 12 megapixel camera.

These restrictions are all ultimately in place to ensure long term system reliabiliy and performace of this forum.

I see no problem with the 256k limit.

You can easily get a high quality image at 1024x768 or even larger within that file size and resizing your images is easily enough. Nobody want to have to download a 4000+ pixel wide 3mb image when reading a message anyway! If somebody does want a higher quality image then it can always be sent via email.

If it contributes to the smooth running and quick load times of the forum I'm all for it!

:)
