Post subject:  Oil preasure guage

Hey guys, I was driving home last night and noticed when I took my foot off the gas the oil fuel pressure was dropping to below 5 and the warning light came on. When I got home I checked the oil level and it was a little below the min level.

This morning I drove 3 mins to the garage and bought some oil (1 litre Shell 15/40 as I didn't have much choice) then poured it in. This time when I check the oil level it was a little above the max line but still the oil preasure dropped when no gas.

When driving the oil preasure is the same and when I stop at lights it drops again, then after a minute rises to just below ten and the warning light goes off?

Any ideas?

How much oil does the engine take? Was a litre too much? Not enough?

Thanks for any help

GSR's don't have a warning light for oil pressure.........is it on the dash or an aftermarket item?

With the tight tolerances of a Vr4 it's acceptable to see the standard pressure gauge just below "no pressure" when hot.

Hey Bitza, it's an aftermarket one. The one on the dash doesn't work. It usually sits around 15-20 around idle but is a lot lower at the moment. The car still seems to be running and sounding the same?

But obviously don't wanna drive it as I don't want to cause and internal damage?

Where is the gauge plumbed in?.....timing case, block etc

Should be straight off the pump shoulder where the oil filter sits. What's the reason for the standard one not working?

Is the sender unit faulty?

I have no idea. I will take a look this afternoon, It was all done when I bought it. I don't know why the original isn't working the original boost gauge doesn't work either. I actually just presumed you couldn't run both. Guess you can haha.

I'm not sure if it's the sender, just find it funny as as soon as it came on I checked it and the oil was low. Would 1 litre be enough to move it for minimum to maximum? Does it take a while for the preasure to build back up?

When you say the oil was "low", did the oil still show on the dipstick or was it totally clean?

Oil pressure in the pump should be constant at idle and is controlled with a bypass to ensure oil pressure is not excessive as the engine revs. Sounds to me like your gauge has either the plastic or brass line, in itself, this will take time for the gauge to react due to the lines length.

There was still oil in there but it was the below the min line. And only drove a couple of minutes until putting more oil in. I will let it run a while today and see what happens. Ill keep you posted.

Thanks again for all your help Andrew

just to be safe, i would take the rocker cover off and make sure that there is oil getting to the head, better safe than sorry.... i thought the guage broke on my vk, after a while a noise started in the head, so i took the cover off and it was bone dry. Oh and the noise was a snapped rocker lol

If the VR4 wasn't getting oil the head would rattle like a bitch, run poorly as the lifters are getting insufficient oil flow. :)

Thanks for the helps with this guys. On Sunday I let it run for about 20 mins then this morning in the way to work there was no warning light :)

So i'm guessing you were spot on Andrew!

Also Andrew, have you got any pics of your car, ive seen some knocking around but not sure if you have a load together, would really like to check out the beast. And I read somewhere about swapping the indicators and side lights around, does anyone know the legality of this?

Thanks
