Hello all.

Last couple of days when i put my foot into it i've been having the revs jump up as if i was getting wheelspin. But without the front end jumping up and down it turns out the clutch is slipping. I just got a big dose of it booting it uphill. Car must know it's tax return time.

Now i'm competent fixing non-gearbox related problems but i've never done a clutch. How difficult is it to do yourself? Apart from an aligning tool is there anything else i need or need to know about. I will probably get the flywheel machined while im in there. I would just like to avoid paying someone to put a clutch in.

Any help/advice would be great. Cheers.

Hey Simon,
You can do a clutch with the engine in........but you will need to remove the passenger side mount and tilt the engine........good possibility that you will ruin the front and rear engine mounts though.

I have always removed the whole engine and gearbox, easier to do and you can separate on the floor, just make sure when you remove the gearbox you get that pesky (hidden) 12mm bolt on the inside of the block! (just above the passenger CV)

It's pretty easy, make up a small steel plate holder, one end to bolt onto the block the other end to bolt onto a flywheel clutch bolt, this will lock the flywheel for you to remove.

Install a clutch aligning tool into the clutch plate then slide the pressure plate over the top, align onto the dowels on the flywheel, bolt down in incremental steps to ensure the pressure plate is square.

Put your gearbox back on and put it back in the car...........up to you how you do it. :)

Cheers for that Andrew. That plate holder to lock the flywheel is a great idea!

I've already lined up a mechanic mate who's got a hoist. I'll be doing all the work and he'll just help me when i need it. Just going to put in an exedy hd which i think is what is in there now. It's held up pretty well considering it's dealing with over 380FtLb of torque. I'll be doing it with the engine in so hopefully having it on a hoist will limit the damage to the engine mounts.

Do you know what sort of torque the flywheel bolts require?

I tightened mine to 14nm.......it's not alot.

The flywheel bolts need to be tightened to 135nm.

Just remember to lengthen the pushrod on the clutch pedal by approx 4 turns or 4mm. If you don't, you will crunch gears and be unable to engage/disengage clutch.

You will only need to do this if the clutch master has been mucked with, if the gearbox worked fine before it will work fine with a clutch replacement as the system is designed to "take up" wear the same as a brake system.

If you lengthen the pushrod you will push past the hydraulic outlet, that way you won't engage anything.

Yeah i've been meaning to ask you guys if i will need to bleed the clutch again. Obviously i will test the clutch before taking it on the road to make sure the pushrod is fully engaging the clutch when the pedal is depressed as well as fully releasing it. I'm thinking i shouldn't really have to take the slave cylinder off if i have enough slack in the line. I might just bleed it again anyway for the hell of it. Guess i'll find out soon enough.

You will need to remove the line and you will loose the fluid...........this means you'll have to bleed......easy done though. :)

Here are some photos of what i did this morning. Took me just under 2 hours to get the box out. And then realised i ordered the wrong clutch. For some reason i ordered a cordia clutch...when i needed a vr4 clutch. Yes, i am an idiot. Will go back monday arvo to finish it if clutch is available locally. Not going to be getting the flywheel machined. It's in pretty good nick, will just use some emery paper to rub it back a bit.

Hummm.........something funny there Simon, the VR4 clutch won't fit the cordia flywheel, and the VR4 flywheel won't fit in a cordia box........by looking at the photo's it's a cordia clutch.

Yeah that's what i originally thought which is why i thought i had got the right clutch. The only thing i can think of is i received a 1.6L clutch instead of the 1.8L. The part number on the friction plate i took off was UD006 (or something close) and the new clutch had UD005 on the friction plate

Any idea on the part number for an hd exedy clutch that fits the cordia flywheel?

Found this thread. I'll go by the part number mentioned here.

Well i've done a bit of searching. Seems the exedy HD clutch for the cordia has part number MBK-6276HD so that's what i'll be ordering. However i think this part number may be redundant. Just found a pdf of 2014 exedy catalogue and it has the cordia clutch kit part number as: 05026.

OK...........just pulled out my receipts for my EXTREME clutch in Bitza:

Clutch plate: DMI2220202DSB @215X20X22MM

Pressure Plate: CMI22102MS

This clutch holds the power.........Brad used this clutch aswelll which destroyed his gearbox........should hold for you. :)

Got an exedy heavy duty. The correct part number is: MBK-6276HD. Couldn't finish it tonight but gearbox is back on. Just a matter of driveshafts and gearbox oil and i'm good to go. Stripped a bloody wheel stud though. I hate cordia front hubs, i really do...
