My mechanic told me this morning that separating the 2 sections of the
passenger side drive shaft would allow the CV joint end of that drive shaft
to clear a bracket, and be removed, but he needs advice on how to separate
that drive shaft. My 4WD 1986 Cordia drove OK until the clutch (apparently)
failed, and my hope is to have the clutch repaired. Thanks for your help.

Is the passenger side a 2 piece shaft?

If so just remove the whole thing, not too sure what you mean......post a pic?

Thanks, and I'll have to arrange to photograph the problem drive shaft which, he
told me, was a 2 part driveshaft...the Cordia is in a secure area, and I'll have to meet
him there to take the picture(s).

I biked to the workshop this morning, and photographed the
passenger side drive shaft, which certainly seems to be 2 pieces, of
~150 mm long outside, and ~350 mm long inside, and my mechanic
explained that the opening(rounded at the top and open at the bottom) in a bracket
prevented removal of the 2 piece drive shaft.
I'll try for better photographic angles of the inside drive shaft when I bike down there again.

What bracket are you trying to clear?

Also I'm supprised its a 2 piece shaft.... but eaither way seperating it would be the same as seperating anything that old, with great difficulty..

Would be interesting to know what he cant clear while trying to take it out....

Cheers,
Damien

Hi Damien:
Thanks, and he showed me again, today, the brackets which, he said, are within a quarter inch of
clearing, but which are preventing removal. The photographs I took last week included those brackets, which have had their nuts and bolts removed, and I was lucky enough to photograph them last week, not knowing their significance, and those brackets, overlapping by ~6 millimeters, are shown with a red arrow pointing at them here:
http://superfly.co.nz/Cordia/brackets.jpg
He also showed me a horizontal framing brace, extending ~ 1 meter from fore to aft, and he said removing that framing brace could allow him to remove the driveshaft, but he said the engine would need to be supported from below if he removed that brace.
Also, I may have found a shop service manual in Seattle today, but I'm not sure if 4WD is covered(or even needed for this clutch repair) but I asked anyway.

That looks like the front of the transfer case bracket (which should bolt to the block)........you may have to remove the whole transfer case from the box to get the shaft out.

This morning, my mechanic said that the brackets photographed(linked, 2 posts above) connect the axle to the block.
Another mechanic, 1500 meters southeast, and possibly the mechanic who replaced this Cordia's gearbox 20 years ago, said that the clutch could be accessed by removing the driveshaft, and then the gearbox(6 bolts) but that the transfer case leading back to the rear axle also may need to be lowered, or removed.
After biking back to my mechanic with those clues, my mechanic said that supporting the engine+gearbox while removing the ~ 1 meter long subframe piece below could allow removal of the driveshaft.
Greg Park in Seattle also replied this morning to say that the Cordia shop service manual he has for sale makes no mention of 4 wheel drive Cordias.
Would anyone have, for sale, a shop service manual covering 4WD Cordias?

Tredias are virtually the same as Cordias so hopefully these may help.

Thanks very much for those 3 page photographs, and I'll email them to my mechanic now.
