Hi All

The cordia I just purchased has a decent amount of rust around the rear hatch (and the hatch itself is rusted out under the spoiler but i think that will just be a replacement hatch job). Here are some pics.

I am decent with the mechanical and electrical side of things but I have no idea about body work and rust repair.

Just wondering what the best course of action to repair this rust is? Should I be getting the whole section cut out and a new section (from a wreck/donor car) welded in? Or can this rust be fixed with fibre glass filler?

Also what should be be doing right now to prevent it from getting worse, should i be hitting it with a grinder and wirebrush to get rid of the loose and surface rust then putting some kind of rust treatment on it?

The rust holding your pinchweld isn't that bad..........I've seen worse.

Best idea for you is to remove all of the flaky rust, treat with rust converter and use a primer rich in zinc to stop it from getting worse.

This next step is up to you, for the hole you have to the right of the boot lock you can cut that section out and replace with some sheet metal, or use fibreglass filler and fill it.

As for the leading edge you can use the same method, oh and don't forget to clean the inside of the hatch rubber (where the metal sits) as this will also contain rust particles.

Thanks for the info Bitza.

By the "leading edge" do you mean that seam/lip that the hatch rubber sits on top off?

As you can see from the pics there is a decent section of that seam/lip pretty much gone on the drivers side corner. Could you build this seam/lip back up using fibre glass filler or would you need to weld something back on?

Sanding back and filling/patching dosn't worry me too much as I have done a fair amount of gyprocking and plastering so i can transfer those skills but I have never welded so would probably have to go to a professional if I decided to go that direction.
