heh i never thought id be asking this but i cant find a definitive answer through the search function

essentially 5th gear is still 4th - whats wrong?
i dont wanna lock overdrive on - i just want 5th gear back
is there a single answer to this problem?
its for an AC if that helps...
pics would be useful for showing things like 5th gear canister, solenoid etc.

also what causes that "fwd-diff-whine"? in my old car when i backed off in any gear it would whine like a bitch and jolt around like something in the transaxle was really being stressed but the gearbox in my new car is good and doesnt whine like this when i back off.
