hey all me again haha...


Well got a question that has to do with GPS unit's....not for cars tho for sea use.......

Im living in flinders and working within the commercial fishing trade....

and the gps we have on the 47ft boat is way to small... its just a normal 5inch screen....

What im wanting to do is hook up a gps receiver to a laptop and use it that way... ive seen it done before....

any one no what's needed ? (have the laptop already) like a special receiving unit? or can i buy a cheap one and it ill do the same??

i signd up to some gpsaustralia website but there having a windge cause i tried signing up with a hotmail account......

well, you can buy USB GPS receivers from ebay, the issue is finding software + maps.

For marine use, I would recommend something intended for the purpose, mate you don't want to run your boat up a reef because your laptop told you it was ok... Also, laptops crash, hard drives die, less reliable, not waterproof etc.

yer i no ive seen the ebay ones i was looking before....
and the software is mostly where im lost...

the maps most sea worth gpses use C-MAP

yer i no they die and so forth......and as for water proof that wont matter unless the wheel house starts leaking then weve got a problem haha

I found garmin devices ranging from 40...to 200 as for software it would either come with it or you just download it.

as you probably know, anything with "marine" in front of it automatically doubles the price...

Whatever you do, make sure you're comfortable with putting your life in it's hands. Something to think about if you were intending on getting a $40 GPS. In a car, worst case, you get lost... In a boat, if it happens when you're in bad weather and you can't navigate, then you could crash into something... Ok maybe that's a bit of an extreme example but you should give it some thought.
